Professor Maria Fitzgerald is Professor of Developmental Neurobiology in the Department of Anatomy at University College London. She has developed a new field of study by her parallel investigations of the anatomy and physiology of developing peripheral nerve and spinal cord in rats and humans. Her work has important practical consequences since it permits a detailed assessment of the neurological status and analgesic needs of premature neonates.
