Mala Maini is Professor of Viral Immunology at University College London and a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator. She has an outstanding international profile for defining cellular interactions and molecular pathways driving disease pathogenesis in chronic hepatitis B virus infection, which kills 780,000 people annually worldwide. Uniquely, her discoveries have impacted diverse fields, from basic immunology to Hepatology and GU Medicine and are of major global relevance. Her insights have also advanced fundamental paradigms of innate and adaptive immunobiology of the liver, of generic relevance to manipulating the balance between hepatic immunity and tolerance in other disease settings.
