Kairbaan Hodivala-Dilke is Professor of Angiogenesis at Queen Mary, University of London. She has provided important insights into the roles of cell adhesion molecules in tumour angiogenesis which have caused a fundamental change in thought. She has transformed the angiogenesis field by showing that blood vessels are not simply conduits for blood supply, but provide paracrine signals which can control chemosensitisation of tumour cells. This work has revealed novel mechanisms for increasing chemosensitisation of tumours by targeting tumour blood vessels, rather than tumour cell themselves. Her work has revolutionised the entire field of tumour angiogenesis and she is operating at the highest level internationally.
