Professor Arthur Weston is the Leech Professor of Pharmacology at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Manchester. He is an internationally recognised authority on smooth muscle and, in particular, on the physiology and pharmacology of potassium channels in this tissue. In a series of seminal publications he identified the properties and effects of the so-called “potassium channel openers”. Of great potential practical value is his work on the organ specificity of these drugs. Unlike many senior scientists, Arthur Weston is still very active at the bench and he made many of the electrophysiological recordings in his current papers.
