Anthony Turner is Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Leeds. He has led an pioneered our understanding of the structure, function and biomedical applications of proteinases implicated in neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, and in prostate cancer. He introduced the concept of the synaptic “neuropeptidase” and established the concept of membrane protein shedding by metalloproteinases. He was the first to identify and clone the angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) gene. His recent work has identified a mammalian ACE3 gene, shown the importance of lipid rafts and cholesterol in amyloid formation in Alzheimer’s disease.
