Professor Marc Feldmann is Professor of Cellular Immunology at the Kennedy Institute Division of Imperial College. His work on the pathogenesis of autoimmunity has led to important progress in understanding the role of cytokines in rheumatoid arthritis. It has led directly to a major therapeutic advance, treatment with TNF blocking antibodies or soluble receptors. This work, in collaboration with another of our Fellows, Professor Tiny Maini, has recently been recognised by the award of the Crafoord Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy in 2000, a prize previously awarded to one of our other Fellows, Lord May.
