Janet Treasure, Professor of Psychiatry at King’s College London, is the most significant clinical academic in the field of eating disorders in the UK. She was responsible for a new approach to our understanding of eating disorders applying novel genetic and neuroscientific techniques to investigate causation. Her studies brought about a paradigm shift in our understanding of eating disorders, away from the emphasis on psychosocial factors. She has combined such techniques with strong patient and carer engagement translating new understanding into better treatments. Her treatment research, routed in a strong understanding of the neuroscience of eating disorders, has looked to the role of carers, developing collaborative therapies using self-management books, videos, on-line platforms and virtual reality.
