Irwin McLean is Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Dundee. He is distinguished for his contributions to the molecular basis of inherited skin diseases. He has identified the cause of over 20 different genetic disorders. Especially notable was the discovery that mutations in filaggrin play a major role in atopic dermatitis and a range of allergic conditions. This implies that natural variation in skin barrier function is a key determinant of individual immune responses.
