Eric Miska, Herchel Smith Chair of Molecular Genetics at the University of Cambridge, is noted for his pioneering work on gene regulation through RNA. He developed the first microRNA microarray which led to the first genome-wide analyses of microRNA gene expression in animals. This led him to discover that microRNAs as a class are deregulated in human cancer. In addition to elucidating the mechanisms of such small RNA pathways, he has made major contributions to the evolution of these pathways in metazoan, discovering that in C. elegans small RNA pathways can lead to a mutigenerational, truly epigenetic memory, a first in animals. He is actively contributing to the translation of his ground-breaking discoveries and is a co-Founder and a Director of STORM Therapeutics, a University of Cambridge spin-out developing novel RNA therapeutics.
