Cecilia Lindgren is Director of the Oxford Big Data Institute and has made pioneering work in the field of obesity and reproductive disease genetics. She is a world leader in the field of metabolic disease genetics, with a career focusing on the genetics of some of the world’s most debilitating common diseases. She has led seminal studies in diabetes, and has led international efforts studying predisposition to obesity, fat composition and reproductive disease. She was the first to demonstrate that sexual dimorphism of fat distribution relates causally to cardiometabolic and reproductive disease, opening a new field of research dissecting the biology of sexual dimorphism of common diseases. In 2021 she became the first female director of the Big Data Institute in Oxford.
