Andrew Carr is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford. He has pioneered the genetic investigation of osteoarthritis. He has established the largest collections in the world, which have now been used to define a number of important genetic loci. He has also made significant contributions to our understanding of crystal joint diseases and rotator cuff tendon tear. The Oxford Scores, which are patient reported outcome measures developed by his team are now used worldwide in national joint replacement registers and large scale clinical trials. I am delighted to welcome him to the Academy of Medical Sciences.
