Andres Floto is Professor of Respiratory Biology at the University of Cambridge. He has made substantial contributions to our understanding of both basic immunological processes, and the emergence and spread of novel pathogens. He was the first to identify person-to-person transmission of the emerging CF pathogen Mycobacterium abscessus and demonstrate the presence of globally-circulating clones that have evolved, through multiple rounds of within-host adaptation, to become more virulent. These findings have changed clinical practice around the world and led to the design of safer hospitals. He is also co-founder of the AZ/GSK-funded Cambridge Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, that applies AI to tackle biomedical challenges and accelerate drug discovery.
