Professor Alastair Buchan is Professor of Clinical Geratology at the University of Oxford. His major interest is stroke and his research group in Calgary were one of the most productive stroke research groups across a range of areas including clinical assessment, imaging, developing new therapies, and experimental work. From the outset, he has been concerned with neuroscience-based approaches to limiting or reversing the damage caused by acute, especially ischaemic, stroke. He has made crucial observations in the ‘cascade of disaster’ that follows an ischaemic insult and then endeavoured with others to apply this understanding in treatments. His most recent work has utilized neuroimaging to define high and low risk populations with cerebral ischemia and to explore the potential role of genomics and biomarkers to identify individuals at risk of cerebral ischemia. Professor Buchan is an outstanding clinical investigator with an enviable track record in clinical research in the area of cerebrovascular disease and stroke.
