Baroness Onora O’Neill is Principal of Newnham College Cambridge. She is a philosopher who has spearheaded a revival of interest in, and respect for, a Kantian approach to ethics in general and to bioethics in particular. This has added a new dimension to contemporary western bioethics. In her capacity as Chairman of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics she has played an important role in promoting a genuine ethical approach to medical research. Many of us will have enjoyed her Reith lectures this year, and we will shortly have the pleasure of hearing her address the Academy of Medical Sciences.
