Medical statistics and epidemiology. Benefits and risks of cancer treatments.
Sarah Darby is Professor of Medical Statistics at the University of Oxford. Her work has had major impacts in three areas: radiological protection, diagnostic CT scans and cancer therapy. Notably she showed that radiation-related risks usually multiply underlying risks rather than adding to them and they last much longer than previously realised. Her work has been cited frequently by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, and is referenced in the main national and international breast cancer guidelines in the UK, the US and Europe. Importantly it has informed radiotherapy practice worldwide.
