Dr Hovorka’s research spearheaded the development, regulatory acceptance, and clinical practice adoption of closed loop delivery (the artificial pancreas) worldwide.
Roman Hovorka is a mathematician and physiological modeller at Cambridge University and is recognised to be among the world leaders in the development of the artificial pancreas. His work spearheaded the medical and social acceptance of the artificial pancreas as a novel treatment paradigm and his studies were the first to evaluate the artificial pancreas during free living conditions in adults and youth. Dr Hovorka’s patents, mathematical modelling, and decision support software have been licensed and commercialised by industry and he continues working with industry on advanced artificial pancreas systems to improve insulin delivery and glucose sensing components.
