Rob Taylor is Professor of Mitochondrial Pathology at Newcastle University. His work has resulted in the discovery of over 40 mitochondrial disease genes, leading the majority of the international studies himself and identifying and functionally characterising these genes.
He has innovated therapeutically, demonstrating an elegant strategy for the treatment of heteroplasmic mitochondrial DNA diseases through selective depletion of mutant mtDNA molecules. He has provided key leadership in the UK and internationally to transform the diagnosis of mitochondrial disease. As an NHS clinical scientist, his ability to translate world class genetic research into improved care for patients is of strategic importance for clinical medicine, and he is at the forefront of translating genomic innovations nationally into clinical practice.
