Professor Rob Brownstone FMedSci

Robert Brownstone is Professor of Neurosurgery at UCL and is a highly accomplished neurosurgeon. He has made major contributions to the field of spinal cord developmental physiology using advanced techniques in mouse models to identify and characterise neural circuits for movement. His preclinical work has demonstrated that transplantation of embryonic stem cell derived motor neurons into peripheral nerves can lead to functional muscle re-innervation with implications. His combined stem cell and clinical expertise has also led him to highlight ethical issues to be addressed when moving from animal studies to first-in-human studies for spinal cord injury.
