Elected Fellow 2017
Director of the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at University of Glasgow, Jill Pell’s work on tobacco control is world-leading. She led a comprehensive programme of research evaluating the impact of the Scottish smoke-free legislation that demonstrated benefits in terms of myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction, childhood asthma, pregnancy complications and quit attempts. Her most recent study which demonstrated increased risk of learning difficulties, dyslexia and autism among children conceived in winter months has led to a novel linkage of health and education data to data on UV radiation levels held by NASA to explore the possible role of vitamin D.
