Professor Ann John OBE FMedSci
Ann John is Clinical Professor of Public Health and Psychiatry at Swansea University. Her research has deepened understanding of the epidemiology and risk factors of suicide and self-harm, challenging prevailing narratives and broadened focus across both psychiatry and primary care. This work has influenced national policy, informed professional practice, and shaped media portrayals of suicidal behaviours, helping to ensure reporting is responsible and evidence-based. Her findings have also been widely disseminated to the public and key stakeholder groups, shifting public perceptions and reducing stigma surrounding mental health. Through the combined effort of policy reform, practical guidance, media influence, and community partnership, she has demonstrated that medical research can extend far beyond academic outputs.
