Professor Amar Rangan is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of York. He is an outstanding surgeon scientist who has established, and leads, the Academic Centre for Surgery in Middlesbrough in partnership with the University of York and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
His scientific contributions have had global impact on clinical practice and health policy. They include leading high quality multi-centre randomised trials of common surgical interventions. The PROFHER trial has influenced the management of proximal humeral fractures globally; and the UKFROST trial has important implications for the management of frozen shoulder, a common painful and debilitating condition. Consequently, patients and clinicians now avoid unnecessary and risky surgery for these conditions.
