Is Professor of Nephrology in Birmingham and Programme Director of the Wellcome Trust CRF.. Her main research interest relates to the immune aspects of renal disease and vasculitis. She has shown that binding of ANCA to the cell surface promotes a prolonged respiratory burst and cytokine release, accelerated apopotosis and poor clearance of the apoptosed cells by phagocytes. Her work on signalling mechanisms stimulated by ANCA binding has identified potential novel therapeutic targets and she has initiated translational studies to test whether inhibition of TNF, a key priming agent of ANCA stimulated signal transduction, is beneficial. Her work also encompasses genetic investigation of well-defined patient cohorts and has shown that polymorphisms that influence the binding of IgG can modify the severity of vasculitis-induced renal impairment. She is clinical Investigator of outstanding ability.
