Peter Horby, Professor of Emerging Infectious Diseases at the University of Oxford, has had major worldwide impact in advancing the field of emerging and epidemic infections.
Working in Hanoi he described the first human cases of H5N1 (bird flu) in Vietnam. The findings of his research have underpinned national and international guidelines for assessing and managing the threat of novel influenza viruses.
Professor Horby has made a series of important contributions to the development of treatments for Ebola which include the first use of a siRNA product in patients with the Ebola virus, the largest trial of convalescent plasma in Ebola, and innovations in clinical trial design for epidemic infections.
