Yesterday, the Academy of Medical Sciences held its fourth Winter Science Meeting, which brought together our Starter Grant holders, Academy Fellows, funders and for the first time a new cohort or researchers; our first round of Springboard awardees.
The day featured a keynote lecture will be by Professor Sadaf Farooqi FMedSci, and a number of discussions and presentations on topics such as succeeding in funding applications, progressing to leadership positions, research reproducibility, social media and press engagement.
Three competitions took place during the event, two based around presenting research to an audience and a panel of judges, the Research in 3 and Oral Plenary sessions, and a poster prize.
The winners of this year's competitions are:
Dr Catherine Aiken, a Clinical Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Cambridge, winner of the Oral Plenary prize, with her talk on "Demand for abortion in Latin America in the wake of the Zika virus".
Dr Jaqueline Maybin, also a Clinical Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Edinburgh, winner of the Research in 3 prize, presenting her work on the function of the endometrium (the lining of the womb).
A prize were also given to the best two research posters of the day, which went to UCL researchers Dr Robert Aldridge and Dr Michael Devine.
