Regional activities

Following the establishment, last year, of a network of Regional Champions, the Academy is pleased to highlight some of the many regional activities delivered to date and those in planning for the coming months. We are most grateful for the enthusiasm and support of all our Regional Champions.

Scotland: Champion - Professor Jane Norman FMedSci

  • Team science discussion suppers were held in Dundee and Edinburgh in October 2014

  • A Fellows' discussion dinner is planned in Edinburgh for 15 June 2015 where Professor Andrew Morris FRSE FMedSci wil be speaking on `Healthcare in the information age'

North East: Champion - Professor Patrick Chinnery FMedSci

  • An annual AMS Lecture has been initiated. The first event, with Professor Andrew Morris FRSE FMedSci confirmed as speaker, will be held in Newcastle on 4 November 2015

North West: Champion - Professor Susan Wray FMedSci

  • A Fellows' meeting and discussion supper was held in Manchester on 29 April to coincide with the AMS careers event on `Interdisciplinary medicine and academic careers'. Professor John Harris FMedSci and Professor Barbara Sahakian FMedSci gave talks on `Cognitive enhancement'

Yorkshire and Humberside: Champion - Professor Peter Grant FMedSci

  • Leeds University will host the 2015 Sackler Lecture by Professor Stephen Jackson FRS FMedSci on 11 June. A dinner for Fellows will be held after the lecture.

Midlands: Champion - Professor Steve Watson FMedSci

  • The University of Birmingham will be hosting a lecture by Professor Nilesh Samani FMedSci on 27 May 2015

Wales: Champion - Professor Ole Petersen CBE FRS FMedSci FLSW

  • A joint AMS, Learned Society of Wales and Academia Europea meeting was held at Cardiff University on 25-26 March on `New challenges in the biomedical sciences'. Six Fellows spoke as part of the programme.

  • Cardiff University also hosted a reception to celebrate the election of Welsh Fellows on 27 October 2014 which was attended by The Baroness Finlay of Llandaff FMedSci FLSW, Professor Julie Williams CBE FMedSci FLSW and Professor Kevin Fox FMedSci and also the Academy Executive Director Dr Helen Munn.  

East Anglia: Champion - Professor Gillian Griffiths FRS FMedSci

  • Professor Griffiths will be hosting a Fellows' meeting before the Cambridge leg of the 2015 Sackler Lecture on 25 June 2015.

South East: Champion - Professor Stephen Holgate CBE FMedSci

  • Southampton University will be hosting an AMS FORUM event `Stratified, personalised or P4 medicine, a new direction' on 12 May 2015.

South West: Champion - Professor Jonathan Slack FMedSci

  • A Fellows' discussion meeting was held at Bristol University on 9 December and a further meeting at Bath University on 20 March, which included a poster presentation session  open to all early career researchers and a careers talk by Professor Paul Martin FMedSci. Dr Kelly Makarona, the AMS Grants Manager gave an overview of the Academy's careers activities.
