Parliamentary Committee launches report on the science budget

The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, chaired by Nicola Blackwood MP, has launched its report on the science budget. The Academy provided written evidence to the consultation process, and the President attended an oral evidence session in July 2015.

The report sets out the extensive evidence base demonstrating the impact of the UK’s research outputs, and calls on Government to address challenges facing the sector and to approach public investment with a long-term, stable framework.

Professor Sir John Tooke FMedSci, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences, said:

“We thank the Committee for this timely review, and look forward to engaging with the dialogue it will generate around how the Government can best support the research sector to deliver its full potential. Public investment, through the science budget and wider sources, is vital to attracting further investment from other research funders, including industry and charities.

At a time of significant change within the research landscape, we hope the Government will reflect on the Committee’s findings and work with the sector to ensure that any changes further support the delivery of excellence, and make the UK the best place to carry out research and innovation.”
