Professor Robert Lechler is Professor and Head of the Department of Immunology at Imperial College. He has made important contributions to our understanding of the immunobiology of organ transplantation and in other areas of immunology. He co-discovered the phenomenon of indirect allorecognition. He has pioneered the use of limiting dilution analysis assays as a measure of alloreactivity, which has practical application in the selection of bone marrow donors. Recently he has discovered that the immunodeficiency of malnutrition may be caused by the secondary leptin deficiency that accompanies this condition.
